Frequently asked questions

Account and sign-in

How do I sign in?

You can sign in with Google, or with Apple on iOS. You can also use some features of Old Ways as a guest, with limits shown in the app.

How do I delete my account?

In the Old Ways app, open Profile, tap Delete account and confirm. You may be asked to sign in again, and Apple sign-in users are asked to confirm with Apple. If you cannot use the app, the account deletion page explains how to ask us for help.

Energy and subscriptions

What am I paying for?

Payments are for access to the digital services and functionality that Old Ways provides, such as access to historical map materials, map discovery and processing, cloud storage and delivery, access verification, maintenance and support. You do not buy ownership of any historical map or any copyright in it.

What is Energy?

Energy is a virtual unit used inside Old Ways. It is not money and cannot be transferred or cashed out. You can buy Energy packs through the App Store or Google Play, or receive it as a reward, and spend it on subscriptions and on unlocking permanent access to historical maps.

How do subscriptions work?

PRO and PREMIUM subscriptions are Old Ways access tiers paid for with Energy. They can renew automatically through Old Ways while you have enough Energy, and you can turn automatic renewal off in the app. They are not recurring App Store or Google Play subscriptions, so they do not appear in your store subscription settings.

How do I get a refund for an Energy pack?

Energy pack payments are processed by Apple or Google, so refund requests are handled through the store you bought from. This does not affect any consumer rights you have under applicable law.

Historical maps

What is permanent access to a map?

Permanent access is an entitlement on your account that you unlock with Energy or receive as a reward. It has no scheduled expiry and lasts while the map remains available through Old Ways. It gives you access to use the map in Old Ways, not ownership of the map or any rights to copy or redistribute it. If we permanently remove an individual map you unlocked with Energy while Old Ways continues to operate, we credit your balance with double the Energy you spent, as set out in the Terms of Use. A complete discontinuation of online services is handled separately under the Terms of Use.

How do I report a rights concern about a map?

If you believe material available through Old Ways infringes your rights, email vadym.bezsmertnyi@gmail.com. Please identify the material and explain the basis of your claim, and we will review it.

Why can I not open a map?

A map may require a subscription or permanent access, or you may be offline. Sign in, check your plan and your connection, then open the map again.

Personal maps and georeferencing

How do I import my own map?

Import a map image or photograph from your device, add control points to place it on the map, then save or export the result. Adding at least two control points gives a more accurate scale and rotation.

Are my personal maps uploaded?

Your personal maps and projects are stored on your device. They stay there until you delete them or remove the app.

Offline maps

Does Old Ways need an internet connection?

Some features need one, such as the historical map catalog, terrain, elevation, downloads, sign-in, Energy and purchases. Your own maps and tools such as measuring and saved points work mainly on your device.

Can I use historical maps offline?

You can download protected historical maps for offline use. They need to reconnect to confirm access approximately every three days, otherwise they become temporarily unavailable until access is verified again.

GPS and location

My position is wrong or missing.

Check that location access is allowed for Old Ways in your device settings and that you have a clear view of the sky. GPS accuracy depends on your device and surroundings, so Old Ways should not be used as a certified navigation tool.

Technical problems

What happens during an outage?

Temporary outages and maintenance can happen. We make reasonable efforts to restore the service but cannot promise a recovery time. After some problems we may voluntarily give extra Energy or access, but this is not guaranteed and does not replace any refund or consumer right you have.

What if Old Ways online services are discontinued?

We would give notice where we can. Features that need our servers could stop working, and a downloaded historical map might become unusable even though its file stays on your device. Your own maps and saved points stay on your device. An offline version of Old Ways is something we may consider, not something that exists today. Your unused Energy is not automatically forfeited when online services stop. See the Terms of Use for details.

The app is not working as expected.

Update to the latest version, check your internet connection and restart the app. If the problem remains, send us a message and describe what you were doing, which device you use and what happened.
